AI SEO, Traditional SEO and Generative Search: What Changes

Three ideas that are often mixed together

AI SEO, traditional SEO and generative search are frequently presented as competing strategies. A more useful starting point is to separate the work a business does from the experience a search engine provides. That distinction helps you decide what to improve without rebuilding your marketing plan around every new label.

In this article, traditional SEO means improving a website so people can discover and use its content through search. AI-assisted SEO means using AI tools within that work, for example to organise research or prepare a first draft. Generative search describes an experience that assembles an answer and may point readers to supporting sources. These are working definitions, not three mutually exclusive channels.

The foundations still matter

Google states that established SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet; meeting those conditions does not guarantee inclusion. Google also says there is no special AI schema or new AI text file required for these features. See Google’s guidance on AI features and websites.

For a business reviewing its site, our suggested starting point is simple: choose one commercially important service page. Can a visitor understand the offer, identify who it suits and find a useful next step? If the answer is unclear, fix that page before commissioning a large batch of new content. This is a planning recommendation, not a formula for a particular search position.

What changes in the discovery experience?

Google explains that its AI search features can explore related subtopics when developing a response. The supporting links and answers can vary between experiences. A single screenshot of a brand mention therefore tells you what appeared in that observation; it does not establish lasting visibility or commercial value. The same AI features documentation describes these differences.

Consider a hypothetical buyer comparing website development approaches. One page might explain editing responsibilities, another migration requirements and another ongoing costs. Our recommendation is to make those details useful in their own right, with clear connections between them. Avoid creating near-identical pages merely to repeat a phrase in different forms.

Where AI tools can help your team

AI can assist with organising a supplied brief or identifying questions for a subject expert to review. The final content still needs accountable decisions: which statements can you support, what is specific to your business and what should a customer do next?

Google’s guidance on generative AI content focuses on the value provided to users, and warns that producing many pages without adding value can violate its scaled content abuse policy. Treat a generated draft as material to review, not evidence that a claim is true.

A practical review before publishing

Start with the customer question. Ask a knowledgeable person in your business to check the answer, remove unsupported promises and add the details needed to make a decision. Give the page a clear purpose and review date. Google’s people-first content guidance offers useful questions about originality, expertise and whether a reader leaves with a satisfying answer.

Keep a small record of changes and observations. Note the page, what changed, why it changed and when you will review it. Compare available traffic and enquiry information with the quality of the conversations your team receives. Treat an AI mention as one observation alongside that evidence, rather than a substitute for business outcomes.

Choose the next improvement, not the newest label

For most project discussions, the useful question is: what is stopping the right visitor from understanding this business? The answer may involve content, site structure or a clearer enquiry route.
